Bio:I find it far easier to discuss a fictional character's life then my own, but here goes…

I grew up a GT/LD kid, pre ADA in Potomac Maryland. In other words, I had a pretty good brain, but the dyslexia sometimes jumbled/jumbles things. This was also back in the days when most teachers couldn’t quite grasp the fact that you could actually have a smart kid with a learning difference. Writing has always been one of my greatest joys and greatest frustrations. I could express myself verbally, but had\have great difficulty transferring that to paper. Most of my teachers thought I was, and/or accused me of being, lazy. When in actuality, just a few minor accommodations would have made all the difference in the world. Every year my parents would bring in an Educational Psychologist to explain what I needed to be successful. Every year the teachers/administration would say, "GREAT, No Problem. We completely understand and would be happy to accommodate." But back then, their idea of accommodation was allowing me an extra hour to finish my exams. Did I mention that the hour was during lunch and the location was in the cafeteria with the other students? I actually had a teacher deduct points for writing a letter backwards. After years of meeting with my parents and educational psychologist, the Administration had the audacity to call them in for a meeting because my scores on standardized tests were repeatedly high. They wanted to know if everything was “Alright” at home, because my test scores didn't mesh with my sub-par GPA. They actually said I was either lazy or they were bad parents and that my less then stellar grades was some sort of cry for help. I am not sharing this because of a Woe is me; I need some sympathy, type thing. I was very lucky; my parents could afford the educational psychologist, tutors and private schools. I graduated HS and College and even spent some time in Graduate school. I say this because I want to explain how I can love to write so much, yet still feel so much anxiety associated with the process.

More about me.

I spent most of my career in Human Resources. I left for two years to teach. I actually taught English Lit for a bit, not bad for a Dyslexic that hated school. I enjoyed teaching, but I could not make the financials of it work. I am back in Human Resources, were I will probably stay until I am a world famous novelist or lottery winner; which ever happens first.

On September 24, 2005 I was married to a wonderful woman. She is a Yoga teacher/Photographer www.melissafeldman.com
